From The Homer Tribune, Saturday, May 8, 2010:
The girls responsible for changing things around ecologically get to see the fruits of their work daily when they eat lunch at Homer Middle School.
Blue trays – plastic, reusable and eco-friendly – are now utilized most days over the plastic foam models that used to be common. But the school still has a problem: there isn’t a dishwasher on campus. The blue trays are stacked up at lunch’s end and hauled over to the high school for washing in Cindy Smith’s kitchen.
“We’re using styrofoam again during the turnaround time,” explained Catherine Dolma, who along with Adi Davis, Taylor Ellison and Hannah Baird formed EcoLogical.
Amid a year of many awards and recognitions for their community projects, the girls added another: A Presidential Environmental Youth Award for Region 10, which includes Alaska, Washington and Oregon. They will receive their award on a trip to Washington D.C. later this month.
