About 2,000 people have said they will participate in the United Way of the Tanana Valley’s annual Cleanup Day, but organizers are hoping thousands more will sign up by Saturday.
On average, 5,000 people volunteer to take to the streets and surrounding areas of Fairbanks to pick up trash, said Bev Fantazzi, resource development manager for the local United Way.
Fantazzi is concerned that some people who have already adopted stretches of road aren’t letting the United Way know of their plans for the weekend. However, she said, it’s important for these people to check in with the group so the United Way knows where to allocate other volunteers.
